The Abney hand level basically is a sighting device equipped with horizontal crosswire, a level bubble observed in the field of view and complete with a vertical arc. The Abney is characterized by its simple handling and rapidity with which elevation and depression angles can be determined. This instrument is particularly suitable for preliminary surveys, road- and railroad constructions, cross-sectioning, gradient and slope explorations, geological and forestrial purposes. As the base of the sighting tube is machined flat the ABNEY may also be used as a clinometer.
Length of tube incl. eye diapragm 162 mm, radius of arc 40 mm, graduation 360°, arc divided to single degrees up to plus and minus 90°, vernier reading 10’.
